Adult Dosing
Peptic ulcer, IBS, acute enterocolitis
- 1-2 caps [5 mg/2.5 mg-10 mg/5 mg] PO tid-qid
- Elderly/debilitated patients: Start with 2 caps [10 mg/5 mg]/day PO; gradually increase as needed and tolerated
Notes:- Individualize dosage as per patient response for maximum therapeutic effects
- Give before meals and at bedtime

- Caution patients against using alcohol during therapy, as alcohol may potentiate the effects of chlordiazepoxide
- Therapy may produce drowsiness and blurred vision. Instruct patients to avoid performing hazardous tasks which require mental alertness such as driving an automobile or operating a machinery
- Avoid use during pregnancy due to an increased risk of congenital malformations with the use of therapy during the first trimester of pregnancy
- Consider possibility that a woman of childbearing potential may be pregnant at the time of initiation of therapy
- Administer smallest effective dose initially, then gradually increase as needed and tolerated in geriatric and debilitated patients
- Avoid concomitant use with other psychotropic agents unless indicated; carefully consider pharmacology of the agents especially when potentiating compounds such as MAO inhibitors and phenothiazines are to be initiated
- Psychiatric patients are more susceptible to paradoxical reactions to chlordiazepoxide such as excitement, stimulation and acute rage; monitor such patients during initiation of therapy
- Suicidal tendencies may occur when used in treatment of anxiety states where there is a possibility of depression; provide appropriate protective measures
- Rare cases of variable effects on blood coagulation have occurred in patients receiving oral anticoagulants and chlordiazepoxide
- Abrupt discontinuation of chlordiazepoxide may cause withdrawal symptoms; gradually taper dose to discontinue
- Monitor periodic blood counts and LFTs in case of prolonged therapy

- History of seizures
- History of psychosis
- High environmental temperature
- Alcohol or drug abuse
- Elderly patients
- Debilitated patients
Supplemental Patient Information
- Instruct patients to avoid performing hazardous activities requiring mental alertness such as driving an automobile or operating a machinery
- Caution patients that therapy may produce psychological and physical dependence; advise them to consult their physician before increasing the dose or during abrupt discontinuation of therapy
- Advise patients to communicate with their physician if they become pregnant during course of therapy or intend to become pregnant
- Instruct patients to avoid concomitant use with alcohol or other CNS depressants as this may have an additive effect

Breastfeeding: Possibly unsafe. An inhibiting effect on lactation may occur, as with all anticholinergic drugs.
