Allergic rhinitis

• 4 mg PO q4-6 hrs; Alt: 12 mg Extended Release TABS PO bid
• Max: 24 mg/day

Pediatric Dosing

Allergic rhinitis

• Child 6-11 yrs: 2 mg PO q 4-6 hrs. MAX: 12 mg/day
• Child 12 yrs: 4 mg PO q4-6 hrs; Alt: 12 mg Extended Release TABS PO bid. Max: 24 mg/day

• Relief of allergic symptoms caused by histamine release

• Hypersensitivity to any ingredients of the product
• Children < 2 yrs

• Assess patients for allergy symptoms (eg, cough, rhinitis, nasal congestion, sneezing) before starting therapy and periodically thereafter
• Review therapy to determine if it needs to be continued without change or if a dose change is indicated
• Overdosage of antihistamines may cause hallucinations, convulsions, and death. Antihistamines may diminish mental alertness. In young children, they may produce paradoxical excitation. Use of antihistamines is contraindicated in children < 2 yrs
• Sustained-release form not recommended in children younger than 12 yr of age
• Chlorpheniramine may impair coordination and judgement

Breastfeeding: Small occasional doses of chlorpheniramine would not be expected to cause any adverse effects in breastfed infants. Larger doses or more prolonged use may cause adverse effects in the infant or interfere with lactation, particularly when used in combination with a sympathomimetic agent or when lactation is not well established. • CNS: Drowsiness, dizziness, paradoxical CNS stimulation (in children), incoordination, headache, seizures, toxic psychosis
• EENT: Blurred vision, diplopia, acute labyrinthitis
• CV: Hypertension, arrhythmias , hypotension, palpitations, tachycardia
• RESP: Thickening of bronchial secretions, chest tightness, respiratory depression, wheezing
• GI: Epigastric discomfort, dry mouth, constipation , obstruction
• HEMA: Hemolytic anemia, thrombocytopenia, agranulocytosis, pancytopenia, leukopenia
• GU: Retention , urinary hesitancy, dysuria, erectile dysfunction
• MISC: Anaphylactic/anaphylactoid reactions, dry mucous membranes, diaphoresis, photosensitivity

• Competitively antagonizes central and peripheral H1 receptors (non-selective antihistamine); suppresses the medullary cough center (antitussive); has antidyskinetic, antiemetic and sedative effects due to its anticholinergic properties
• Well absorbed following oral administration
• Metabolized by GI tract, liver; CYP450: 2D6, 3A4 substrate
• Renally excreted (minimally unchanged)
• Half-life: 21-27 hrs
