Adult Dosing
EE with GERD symptoms
- 20 mg PO Daily x up to 4 wks
GERD (no esophageal lesions)
- 20 mg PO Daily x 4-8 wks; may give up to 4 more wks (if relapse of erosive esophagitis or GERD symptoms occurs may give additional 4-8 wk course)
- Maint Dose: 20 mg Daily (Max: 80 mg/day)
Pathological hypersecretory conditions
- Initial: 60 mg PO Daily. Adjust to patient response, divide doses > 80 mg/day
- MAX: 120 mg tid
Gastric ulcer
Active duodenal ulcer
- 20 mg PO Daily for 4-8 wks
- Maint dose: 20 mg/day
Pediatric Dosing
Treatment of GERD and maintenance of healing of erosive esophagitis
Child 1-16 yrs
- 5<10kg: 5 mg PO Daily
- 10<20kg: 10 mg PO Daily
- 20kg: 20 mg PO Daily
- Note:
- Safety is not established in children < 1 yrs
- Should be taken at least one hour before meals
[Outline]
- Omeprazole powder for oral suspension (Zegerid) should be reconstituted with 15-30 mL (1-2 tablespoons) of water. The suspension should be stirred well and ingested immediately. Omeprazole powder for oral suspension should not be mixed with any liquids (other than water) or foods. Extended release tablets and capsules used for self-medication must be swallowed intact with a glass of water. Tablets and capsules should not be chewed or crushed. Drug should be taken before meals
- Atrophic gastritis has been reported with long term use
- Avoid concomitant use of omeprazole with clopidogrel
- Bone fractures may occur in higher doses and longer term use
- Increased serum chromogranin A (CgA) level due to decreased gastric acidity may cause false positive results in diagnostic investigations for neuroendocrine tumors; temporarily stop the treatment for at least 14 days before assessing CgA levels
Cautions: Use cautiously in
- Impaired liver function (dose reduction recommended)
- Hypermagnesemia
- Concomitant use with digoxin
- High dose
- Long-term use
- CYP2C19 or CYP3A4 inducers (St Johns Wort, rifampin)
- Concomitant use with atazanavir or nelfnavir
Pregnancy Category:C
Breastfeeding: Limited information; however, systemic absorption is minimal; so may have minimal excretion to breast milk. The drug would not be expected to cause any adverse effects in breastfed infants.
