Warnings/Precautions

Cautions: Use cautiously in

Pregnancy/Breast Feeding

Pregnancy Category:C

Breastfeeding: Use of povidone-iodine in the mother near term and during breastfeeding increases iodine levels in the breastmilk thus causing transient hypothyroidism in breastfed infants, especially in geographic areas that are iodine deficient. Although povidone-iodine is minimally absorbed through intact adult skin, minimize the exposure of nursing mothers to povidone-iodine by using lower concentrations of povidone-iodine, applying it to the smallest possible surface areas, shortening contact time, and avoiding repeated applications. This information is based upon LactMed database (available at http://toxnet.nlm.nih.gov/cgi-bin/sis/htmlgen?LACT last accessed 15 September 2011). According to manufacturer a decision should be made for discontinuing nursing or discontinue the drug taking into account the importance of the drug to the mother.
