Adult Dosing

Bacterial Conjunctivitis

• 0.3% gatifloxacin
• Days 1 & 2: Instill 1 drop in the affected eye(s) every 2 hours while awake (up to 8 times a day)
• Days 3 through 7: Instill 1 drop in the affected eye(s) up to 4 times per day while awake

• 0.5% gatifloxacin
• Day 1: Instill 1 drop in the affected eye(s) every 2 hours while awake (up to 8 times a day)
• Days 2 through 7: Instill 1 drop in the affected eye(s) 2-4 times per day while awake

Pediatric Dosing

• Note: Safety and effectiveness in infants < 1 yr have not been established

• Topical ophthalmic use only; do not introduce directly into the anterior chamber of the eye
• Growth of resistant organisms with prolonged use
• Discontinue if superinfection or hypersensitivity occurs
• Remove contact lenses during the course of therapy

Supplemental Patient Information

• Advise patients not to wear contact lenses if they have signs and symptoms of bacterial conjunctivitis
• Instruct patients to avoid contaminating the applicator tip with material from the eye, fingers, or other source

Pregnancy Category:C

Breastfeeding: Safety Unknown; excreted in the milk of rats; because many drugs are excreted in human milk, caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing woman.

• EENT: Worsening of the conjunctivitis, eye irritation, dysgeusia, eye pain

• Fluoroquinolone antibacterial; inhibits DNA gyrase (enzyme involved in the replication, transcription, and repair of bacterial DNA) and topoisomerase IV (enzyme known to play a key role in the partitioning of the chromosomal DNA during bacterial cell division) in susceptible gram-negative and gram-positive aerobic and anaerobic bacteria
