• Treatment of ocular conditions where lowering IOP is likely to be of therapeutic benefit (e.g., chronic open-angle glaucoma, secondary glaucoma, preoperatively in acute angle-closure glaucoma)

• Patients with known sulfonamide sensitivity may show allergic reactions to methazolamide such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, fulminant hepatic necrosis, agranulocytosis, aplastic anemia, and other blood dyscrasias. Discontinue the drug if such hypersensitivity reactions occur
• Anorexia, tachypnea, lethargy, coma and death have been reported with concomitant use of high-dose aspirin and methazolamide; use cautiously in these patients
• Methazolamide may precipitate hepatic coma in patients with cirrhosis or hepatic insufficiency as it increases potassium excretion during initial administration
• Use cautiously in patients on steroid therapy due to the potential for developing hypokalemia
• Use in patients with pulmonary obstruction or emphysema may precipitate or aggravate acidosis
• Monitor CBC and platelet count at baseline prior to initiating methazolamide therapy and at regular intervals during therapy. Discontinue the treatment and institute appropriate therapy if significant changes occur

Breastfeeding: Safety unknown; because no information is available regarding the use of methazolamide during breastfeeding, alternate drug may be preferred especially while nursing a newborn or preterm infant. • CNS: Drowsiness, confusion, flaccid paralysis, convulsions
• NEURO: Paresthesias
• EENT: Hearing changes, tinnitus, transient myopia
• DERM: Rash, urticaria, erythema multiforme, toxic epidermal necrolysis
• GI: Taste alteration, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, melena, anorexia
• HEPA: Hepatic insufficiency, fulminant hepatic necrosis
• HEMA: Agranulocytosis, aplastic anemia, hemolytic anemia, myelosuppression, blood dyscrasias, thrombocytopenic purpura, leukopenia, pancytopenia
• METABOLIC: Loss of appetite, metabolic acidosis, electrolyte imbalance
• GU: Polyuria, hematuria, glycosuria, crystalluria, renal calculi, nephrolithiasis
• HYPERSENSITIVITY: Anaphylaxis, photosensitivity, Stevens-Johnson syndrome,
• MISC: Malaise, fatigue, fever, Sulfonamide cross sensitivity

• Carbonic anhydrase inhibitor; inhibits carbonic anhydrase leading to decreased rate of aqueous humor secretion, thus resulting in a decrease in IOP
