Adult Dosing
Fine facial wrinkles, mottled facial pigmentation, benign facial lentigines (Cream)
- Apply a pea-sized amount to lightly cover the entire face, including the eyelids if desired, qhs
Psoriasis (Gel)
- Start by applying 0.05%, with strength increased to 0.1% (if tolerable), in the evenings, to psoriatic lesions, using enough (2 mg/cm2) to cover only the lesion with a thin film to no >20% of body surface area
Acne (Gel)
- Apply a thin film of 0.1% (2 mg/cm2) once daily, in the evenings, to the skin where acne lesions appear
Note:
- Remove makeup before applying cream to the face
- If the face is washed or a bath or shower is taken prior to application, the skin should be dry before applying the cream
- If emollients or moisturizers are used, they can be applied either before or after application of tazarotene cream ensuring that the first cream or lotion has absorbed into the skin and has dried completely
Acne(Foam)
- Apply 0.1% (2 mg/cm2) once daily, in the evenings, to the skin where acne lesions appear
Note:
- Foam is not for oral, ophthalmic, or intravaginal use
- Face should be washed with a mild cleanser and allowed to dry prior to application of foam
- If redness, peeling, or discomfort occurs, reduce frequency of application or temporarily interrupt the treatment. Resume the treatment once irritation subsides, and discontinue if irritation persists
Pediatric Dosing

- Women of child-bearing potential should be warned about the potential harm to the fetus and advised to use adequate birth-control measures during therapy. A negative pregnancy test should be obtained 2 weeks prior to treatment; treatment should begin during a normal menstrual period
- Patients should be advised to contact their physicians or a poison control center, in case of accidental swallowing
- Do not share with others, even if their skin problem appears to be similar to yours
- For external use only; rinse thoroughly with water if there is contact with the eyes
- Should not be applied on eczematous skin until the eczema has fully recovered, because it may cause severe irritation
- Avoid exposure to sunlight unless deemed medically necessary because of heightened burning susceptibility. Patients with sunburn should not use until complete recovery
- Use sunscreens (minimum SPF of 15) and protective clothing during treatment, especially if you are sensitive to sunlight or at risk of considerable exposure to sunlight
- Use with caution in patients taking photosensitizing drugs, because of increased risk of augmented photosensitivity
- Safety of use over more than 20% of body surface area has not been established in psoriasis or acne
- Patients may experience excessive pruritus, burning, skin redness, or peeling during therapy. If such reactions occur, discontinue the drug until the integrity of the skin is restored or reduce the dose to an interval the patient can tolerate
- Weather extremes, such as wind or cold, may be more irritating to patients treated with tazarotene
- Lentigo maligna should not be treated with tazarotene cream; facial pigmented lesions of concern should be appropriately assessed by a qualified physician
- Closely monitor frequency of application by careful observation of the clinical therapeutic response and skin tolerance. Efficacy has not been established for less than once daily dosing frequencies

- Advise patients to gently wash their face with a mild soap and dry it before applying cream
- Inform patients that the tazarotene cream does not remove or prevent wrinkles, reverse photoaging, repair sun-damaged skin, or restore more youthful skin
