Adult Dosing

Acute bronchial asthma, bronchospasm associated with chronic bronchitis and emphysema

• Usual dose: up to 15 mg/kg PO every 6 hours; max daily dose 60 mg/kg

Pediatric Dosing

• Safety and effectiveness in pediatric patients have not been established

• Treatment of acute exacerbations of reversible bronchial asthma and reversible bronchospasm associated with chronic bronchitis and emphysema

• Hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients of the product
• Hypersensitivity to xanthine related compounds

Renal Dose Adjustment (Based on CrCl)

• >80 mL/min: No dose adjustments
• 50-80 mL/min: 75% of normal dose
• 10-50 mL/min: 50% of normal dose
• <10 mL/min: 25% of normal dose

Hepatic Dose Adjustment

• Hepatic impairment: Use with caution; dose adjustments not defined

• Not indicated in the management of serious status asthmaticus, which is a medical emergency
• Excessive doses are expected to be associated with an increased risk of adverse effects

Pregnancy Category:C

Breastfeeding: Probably unsafe; Anticipate occasional stimulant effects in infants because of the relatively high levels in milk and a previous report with theophylline. No severe adverse reactions are expected. Avoid breastfeeding for 3-4 hrs after a dose to minimize amounts excreted in milk. • GI: Nausea, vomiting, epigastric pain, hematemesis, diarrhea
• CNS: Headache, irritability, restlessness, insomnia, hyperexcitability, agitation, muscle twitching, generalized clonic and tonic convulsions
• CV: Palpitation, tachycardia, extrasystoles, flushing, hypotension, circulatory failure, ventricular arrhythmias
• RESP: Tachypnea
• GU: Albuminuria, gross and microscopic hematuria, diuresis
• METABOLIC: Hyperglycemia, inappropriate ADH syndrome

• Xanthine derivative; mediates bronchodilation through competitive inhibition of phosphodiesterase, increases cyclic AMP, produces relaxation of bronchial smooth muscle
• Not metabolized significantly
• Rapid absorbtion
• Excreted in urine (88% unchanged)
• Half-life: 1.8-2.1 hrs
