Pregnancy/Breast Feeding

Pregnancy Category:C

Breastfeeding: Hepatitis A: As per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and several health professional organizations, vaccines administered to a nursing mother do not affect the safety of breastfeeding for mothers or infants and breastfeeding is not a contraindication to the hepatitis A vaccine. Breastfed infants should be vaccinated as per the routine recommended schedules. Hepatitis B: As per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and several health professional organizations, vaccines administered to a nursing mother do not affect the safety of breastfeeding for mothers or infants and breastfeeding is not a contraindication to the hepatitis B vaccine. Hepatitis B vaccine is safely administered directly to newborn infants. Breastfeeding appears to reduce infant side effects associated with routine childhood immunization. Breastfed infants should be vaccinated according to the routine recommended schedules. This information is based upon Lactmed database (available at http://toxnet.nlm.nih.gov/cgi-bin/sis/htmlgen?LACT last accessed 15 June 2011). Manufacturer advises caution.
