Adult Dosing
Ulcerative colitis, active mild to moderate
- Asacol, Asacol HD,Delzicol : 800 mg PO tid x 6 wks
- Lialda: 2.4-4.8 g PO qd. Max: 8 wks
- Pentasa: 1000 mg PO qid x 8 wks
Ulcerative coltis, maintenance therapy
- Apriso: 1.5 g PO qam
- Asacol: 800 mg PO bid
- Delzicol: 1.6 g/day PO in divided doses
Note:
- Take Delzicol 1 hour before or 2 hours after meal
Crohn's Disease [Non-FDA approved]
- Asacol, Asacol HD: 800 mg PO tid x 6 wks

- Mesalamine is an active component of sulfasalazine. Patients experienced hypersensitivity to sulfasalazine may have a similar reaction to mesalamine. Caution should be exercised
- Mesalamine may cause allergic-type reactions including anaphylactic symptoms and life-threatening or less severe asthmatic episodes in certain susceptible patients
- Monitor renal function prior to starting therapy and periodically in patients with preexisting renal disease. Worsening of renal function may occur in patients with preexisting renal disease
- Reports of renal impairment, including minimal change nephropathy, and acute or chronic interstitial nephritis have been associated with mesalamine
- Some products may contain sulfites, which may cause allergic reactions in susceptible individuals
- Exacerbation of colitis characterized by cramping, acute abdominal pain, bloody diarrhea, fever, headache, malaise, pruritus, conjunctivitis, and rash may occur
- Rare cases of acute intolerance syndrome have been reported with therapy. Promptly discontinue treatment if acute intolerance syndrome is suspected
- Mesalamine may lead to elevated test results when measuring urinary normetanephrine by liquid chromatography with electrochemical detection. Consider alternative, selective assay for normetanephrine

- Renal impairment
- Hx of sensitivity to sulfasalazine
- Pyloric stenosis (gastric retention may occur)
- Myocarditis risk
- Pericarditis risk
- Pregnancy
- Lactation (safety not established)
Supplemental Patient Information
- Advise patients to report any unexplained bleeding, bruising, purpura, sore throat, fever or malaise that occurs during treatment
