Adult Dosing
Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)
- 0.4 mg PO Daily
- Increase 0.8 mg PO Daily in patients who fail to respond to the 0.4 mg after 2-4 weeks of dosing
Note- Tamsulosin should be administered approximately one-half hour following the same meal each day. Do not open, crush or chew the tablet/capsule

- Prostate cancer and BPH frequently occur at same time; therefore, patients should be examine for the presence of prostate cancer prior to treatment and at regular intervals afterwards
- Patient treated with tamsulosin have reported signs and symptoms of orthostasis such as postural hypotension, dizziness and vertigo, However with other alpha adrenergic blocking agents there may be potential risk of an syncope
- Avoid using therapy in combination with strong inhibitors of CYP3A4, and alpha adrenergic blocking agent
- Rare cases of priapism have been observed with therapy, Advise patients about the seriousness of this condition as it may lead to permanent impotence if not properly treated
- Intraoperative floppy iris syndrome (IFIS) has been observed during cataract surgery in some patients treated with tamsulosin
- Patient with history of sulfa allergy have reported allergic reaction to tamsulosin. Caution should be exercised when administering therapy in a patient who have serious or life threatening sulfa allergy
Cautions: Use cautiously in
- Hypersensitive to sulfonamides
- Cataract surgery
- Poor CYP2D6 metabolizer
- CYP3A4, PDE5 inhibitors
- Combination with cimetidine
Supplemental Patient Information
- Advise patient about occurrence of symptoms related to postural hypotension, such as dizziness while on therapy, and should be cautioned about driving, operating machinery or performing hazardous tasks
