Respiratory and Cardiac Monitoring

Infants who are born prematurely, have a history of apnea, respiratory problems, or cardiac problems, or who are seriously ill are often placed on continuous cardiac monitors.

Monitor Settings

• Cardiac: Set alarm limits 15 beats per minute above and below normal, age-appropriate resting limits (see Vital Signs).
• Respiratory: Set alarm limits 15 breaths per minute above and below normal, age-appropriate limits (see Vital Signs).

Monitor Lead Placement

• White: Top right
• Green: Lower right
• Black: Top left
• Red: Lower left (Red is sometimes omitted.)

NOTE: If snap-on lead wires are used, they should be attached to the electrodes prior to placing the electrodes on the child.
