Never pull against resistance! Stop and notify HCP immediately.

• Positioning: Sitting or lying on side opposite of chest tubes.
• Administer prescribed analgesia 30 min before removal.
• Remove sutures if used to secure chest tube in place.
• Position and hold occlusive dressing at insertion site.
• Instruct Pt to inhale deeply and hold breath.
• Remove chest tube with one continuous, quick motion.
• Secure occlusive dressing over insertion site.
• Monitor Pt for signs of respiratory distress.
