Pre-op labs are essential in determining Pts readiness for surgery and can be done prior to or morning of surgery. Any deviation from facilitys defined ranges are reported to surgeon and anesthesia.
Type and Screen: Determines blood type and presence of antibodies and is used to crossmatch blood in the event Pt needs blood.
Pt wears a blood bank wristband with unique numbers that match drawn sample for easy and safe identification.
Complete Blood Count (CBC): Measures H&H and WBC for indications of low blood or counts infection. Low platelets or H&H will be further decreased by surgery requiring platelets be given before surgery.
Coagulation Studies: Measures how quickly Pts blood clots and determines any bleeding abnormalities; clotting abnormalities may require administration of fresh frozen plasma before surgery.
Complete Metabolic Panel (CMP): Provides baseline renal and liver functions, including liver enzymes, albumin, glucose, electrolytes, BUN, and creatinine. This information helps in selection of medication and dosages for surgery Blood glucose level should be reviewed by anesthesia and treated prior to transferring Pt to OR.
Urinalysis (UA): Measured for presence of glucose, blood, protein, specific gravity and ketones. These measures help determine presence of infection or hydration status of Pt.
Pregnancy Testing: Individuals capable of becoming pregnant should be tested for pregnancy immediately prior to surgeryMay not apply to Pts scheduled for elective termination of pregnancy or D&C after spontaneous abortion or retained products of conception.
