Inspection
- GI: Abdominal symmetry, shape, and contour; bumps; bulges; bruises; masses; striae; dilated veins; scars; movement and pulsations; distention; skin tightness; glistening
- GU: Inflammation or discharge from urethral meatus
Palpation
- GI: Abdominal size, shape, and position; tenderness of major organs; masses; fluid accumulation
- GU: Kidneys and bladder
Auscultation
- GI: Bowel motility; underlying vessels and organs; bowel sounds (normal, hypoactive, or hyperactive); bruits, venous hum, or friction rub
- GU: Renal arteries (with bell in left and right upper abdominal quadrants)
Percussion
- GI: Tympany, dullness, size and location of abdominal organs, excessive accumulation of fluid and air
- Note: Don't percuss the abdomen if an abdominal aortic aneurysm or a transplanted abdominal organ is present.
- GU: Kidneys for tenderness; bladder for position and contents
