Cholelithiasis is a common occurrence in patients with chronic gallbladder disease. In the past, cholecystectomy was the surgery of choice, but currently, biliary lithotripsy is selected by surgeons. Biliary lithotripsy has many advantages including no surgical incision, less pain, a shorter postoperative period, and a reduction in cost to the patient. In addition, the patient has a 50% reduction in postoperative pulmonary complications. Biliary lithotripsy consists of breaking the gallstones down into small fragments, with the patient receiving either local anesthesia and sedation or general anesthesia (Schick & Windle, 2016).
