Carotid duplex, a low-risk, noninvasive, accurate, safe, and cost-efficient test, is most often ordered. It images the extracranial carotid arteries and measures blood flow velocity across a stenotic area. The blood flows more rapidly through a stenotic area, and degree of stenosis is then quantified. Plaque characteristics are seen with carotid imaging.
