Each of the American Society of PeriAnesthesia Nurses (ASPAN) Standards of Perianesthesia Nursing Practice (ASPAN, 2014) must be considered when caring for patients placed in an observation category. Patient rights must be supported, and autonomy, confidentiality, privacy, dignity, and self-worth must be maintained. The environment where the observation care is provided must be safe, comfortable, and therapeutic. Appropriate staffing must be available. Performance improvement activities (including monitoring and evaluating care utilizing a multi-disciplinary approach) should be implemented. The nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation are essential and should be individualized for each patient admitted to extended observation status (ASPAN, 2014).
