The intensity of service needs should be limited and consistent with the staffing pattern for the unit. For unmonitored beds, a nurse-to-patient ratio similar to the hospital ward would dictate a ratio of one nurse to five patients based on the acuity of the patients. For monitored beds, a nurse-patient ratio similar to hospital-monitored beds would be one nurse to four patients, depending on patient acuity (California Nurses Association, 2004). Some states have mandated staffing ratios in place. One must follow institutional protocols.
