Today, most appendectomy procedures are done via laparoscopy, which is an MIS procedure with several small incisions near the umbilicus through which a small endoscope is placed. Patients undergoing MIS procedures are usually discharged the day of the surgery and recover quickly. In case of atypical appendicitis or peritonitis (medical emergency), a laparotomy is advised. Patients undergoing a procedure with laparotomy have a longer hospitalization and recovery time due to larger abdominal incisions (Ignatavicius & Workman, 2015).
