The purpose of augmentation is to increase the size and/or modify the shape of the native breast or to correct defects from congenital or developmental abnormalities or from tumor removal. The breast implant, either saline or silicone, can be placed directly under the breast tissue or under the pectoralis major (chest) muscle; an endoscope may be used to insert the implant. Inframammary, axillary, peri-areolar incisions or incisions from prior scars, such as those from mastectomy, may be used (Rothrock & McEwen, 2006; Burns & Blackwell, 2007).
