The central vein is often cannulated to provide additional intravenous access and to provide the team with the ability to inject dye into both the arterial and venous systems. The venogram may provide important information about retrograde flow and other vascular abnormalities requiring intervention. An intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) may be inserted for cardiogenic shock or for transport to surgery.
