Breast reconstruction most commonly occurs after a mastectomy and can be performed using native tissue in the form of various flaps or with the use of implants. A combination of the two can also be used. Multiple surgical revisions, including the use of tissue expanders, may occur to achieve the desired result. In breast reconstruction, the skin and breast must be replaced whereas in breast augmentation, native breast tissue is present. According to the 2008 statistics reported by the ASPS, breast reconstructions are performed nearly as often as breast reductions (ASPS, 2015; Nathan & Singh, 2001).
