Continuous local anesthetic wound infusions involve the surgeons placement of a catheter subcutaneously into the surgical wound at the end of the surgical procedure to be used for continuous infusion of local anesthetics, such as bupivacaine or ropivacaine, to control postoperative pain (Pasero, Polomano, Portenoy, & McCaffery, 2011). Just as with continuous peripheral nerve blocks, supplemental IV or oral analgesics should be provided in addition to this therapy.
