The ventricular assist device (VAD), a single-chamber or double-chamber cardiac assist device, may be inserted in the cath lab, planned or emergently implanted, by a cardiologist or vascular surgeon. The new term is a mechanical circulatory support device. The patient may not have a pulse pressure due to the linear nature of this pump, thus a Doppler may be needed to obtain a noninvasive BP. The arterial waveform will reflect the augmented blood pressure.
