The patients head should be elevated 30 to 45 degrees to reduce the swelling and facilitate drainage. Postoperative nasopharyngeal bleeding and secretions can occur; therefore, suction and airway equipment should be readily available (Doherty, 2010; Drain & Odom-Forren, 2008). The passage of blood in the stomach during the procedure may predispose the patient to nausea and vomiting; antiemetic therapy may have to be implemented.
