Liposuction is a surgical contouring technique involving removal of subcutaneous body fat. It can be used on multiple areas of the body, including the abdomen, hips, arms, and back. Traditional techniques, known as suction-assisted lipectomy (SAL), involve placement of tumescent solution with lidocaine and epinephrine into the fatty tissue prior to placing a cannula or tube attached to a vacuum source. Ultrasound-assisted liposuction (UAL) or VASER liposuction involves application of ultrasound energy to break up the fat prior to aspiration. With power-assisted liposuction (PAL), the cannula reciprocates and mechanically breaks up the fat as it is being aspirated (Drain & Odom-Forren, 2008; Logan & Broughton, 2008).
