Discharge criteria should be developed in consultation with the physicians using the following assessment parameters: vital signs (e.g., blood pressure, pulse, respirations, oxygen saturation, temperature, level of consciousness); comfort level (e.g., assessment of pain, nausea, and oral analgesia); surgical site care and maintenance, hydration and nourishment, and activity level (i.e., ability to ambulate); postoperative instructions; support of a responsible adult; and the need to urinate if appropriate (ASPAN, 2014; Burden, Quinn, O’Brien, & Dawes, 2000; Schick & Windle, 2016).
