Prior to obtaining a specimen (urine or blood) for pregnancy testing, the patient should be asked about the possibility of pregnancy, informed of the potential risks of anesthesia relating to pregnancy, and consent given for the pregnancy test (Bierstein, 2006; Palmer, van Norman, & Jackson, 2009; van Norman, 2008). The discussion and patient decision is then documented. Institutional policy may vary as to whether the operative procedure will proceed if the patient declines a pregnancy test, and the patient’s surgeon must be notified of the patient’s decision to be tested or not. It is unethical to test a woman who declines testing.
