Because lidocaine is infiltrated in large volumes, concern has been raised about the impact of the local anesthetic, particularly after reported deaths following liposuction. The typical tumescent solution is diluted by a factor of 10 to 20 times and the vasoconstriction due to the epinephrine limits the introduction of the lidocaine in the circulation. Certain drugs have the potential to affect the metabolism of lidocaine (Iverson & Pao, 2008; Rohrich, Leedy, Swamy, Brown, & Coleman, 2006; Burns & Blackwell, 2007).
