Herniorrhaphy is frequently done under spinal anesthesia with appropriate sedation. All other surgical procedures are usually performed under general anesthesia. On return to the PACU, patients are kept flat and on one side until the reflexes have returned; they may then assume a position of comfort unless otherwise specified by the surgeon. Postoperative care is essentially the same as for small bowel surgery (Schick & Windle, 2016).
