Liposuction is contraindicated in patients with severe cardiovascular disease, coagulation disorders, and during pregnancy. It should not be performed in scarred areas of the torso which might be hiding hernias, or in areas of radiation which increases the risk of visceral perforation. Liposuction should not be performed to treat obesity, but rather to treat localized fatty deposits in the subcutaneous space. Men typically carry their fat around their abdominal organs in the peritoneal cavity and they may therefore be poor candidates for liposuction (Logan & Broughton, 2008; Mysore, 2008).
