It would be optimal for family members to be intimately involved in the patients post-procedure care during observation. The concern becomes the location of where this care is being provided. Some open units, such as the PACU, do not offer much privacy due to the layout of the typical environment. PACUs are usually open rooms with curtains around the bedside that are not conducive to privacy. Whenever possible, cohorting the observation patient away from other patients provides the privacy that allows for more meaningful family involvement in the extended observation patients care and recovery.
