Risk stratification includes identification of patient-related factors, such as a history of VTE, hormone replacement therapy, obesity, use of oral contraceptives, advanced age, recent travel, pregnancy, immobility, smoking, cancer, hypercoagulable blood disorders, recent myocardial infarction, and low flow states, such as congestive heart failure.
