Yes, a nurse can remove the femoral sheath if he or she is trained and credentialed by your institution and allowed by the state board of nursing. Prior to removal of the sheath, be sure the patient has a patent IV; another nurse or provider must be available to monitor and treat potential vasovagal syndrome or dysrhythmias while the sheath is removed and the arterial pressure is applied. The ACT or PTT should be measured prior to the removal of the sheath, and no signs of hemodynamic instability should be noted. Your lab will provide the normal values, but most institutions recommend the ACT below 180 to 200 seconds and the PTT/INR normalized per the institution.
