Fentanyl and midazolam are a common combination used in gastrointestinal procedure areas; droperidol, meperidine, and others are used as well. Guidelines for the administration of droperidol in gastrointestinal procedures are included in the Guidelines for the Use of Deep Sedation and Analgesia for GI Endos-copy Procedures published by the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. Droperidol has been reported to cause torsade de pointes in patients and its use by anesthesia care providers has diminished. (Cole & Schlunt, 2004, p. 392)
