Propofol and inhalation agents, including nitrous oxide, have been used for endoscopic procedures. Propofol has been used in combination with other drugs for upper endoscopies and colonoscopies but without any distinct advantages over other drug regimens. However, its use during endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) and endoscopic gastric duodenum examination with ultrasound-guided biopsy (EUS) has resulted in shorter recovery times, allowed patients to transfer independently, and allowed a faster return to baseline oral intake and activity level. Propofol has been administered for these procedures by other physicians and nurses with advanced airway skills and even by patient-controlled sedation. (Cole & Schlunt, 2004, p. 393)
