If an excessive amount of distending media results in vascular intravasation, the patient can experience hyponatremia and pulmonary edema (Wieslander & Wong, 2013). The procedure should be completed quickly; if the fluid deficit exceeds 1L, electrolytes should be checked. When the fluid deficit reaches 1,500 mL of nonelectrolyte or 2,500 mL of electrolyte distending solution, the procedure must be terminated. These risks can be prevented with close monitoring of fluid use and recovery of the fluid intraoperatively.
