Back A written functional program is critical to ensure that infection prevention strategies are considered in all aspects of PACU functioning. Designers, planners, and administrators are required by The Joint Commission (TJC) to involve specialists in infection prevention in planning new or renovated spaces. Some areas of planning from an infection prevention perspective include:
- Adequate space for storage and safe movement for current and anticipated equipment and personnel, including adequate square footage in separate clean storage and soiled utility spaces
- Adequate storage for linens and supplies to discourage cross-contamination
- Purchased equipment able to withstand routine hospital-grade cleaning products
- Procedures in place or consideration made for effective alternate products if routine cleaning products cannot be used
- Adequate volume of equipment purchased to allow appropriate handling, cleaning, storage, and maintenance (turnaround time)
