The size of the patient and his or her airway condition are crucial factors in choosing the appropriate sedation techniques. If, according to the anesthesiologist’s opinion, the patient is a good candidate for sedation with spontaneous respirations (small stature, good airway), then the procedure is executed in the prone position. If, on the other end, the patient isn’t a good candidate for sedation with spontaneous respirations (obesity, difficult airway, gastroesophageal reflux), orotracheal intubation is preferred (Cole & Schlunt, 2004).
