The first few hours immediately following delivery are critical; complications, either obstetric or post-anesthetic, may be serious. Monitoring in an appropriately staffed and equipped PACU is essential (American Society of PeriAnesthesia Nurses [ASPAN], 2015). Observe for vaginal bleeding and monitor vital signs, including blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate, oxygenation, and temperature, every 15 minutes for at least 1 to 2 hours or until the patient meets discharge criteria for general or regional anesthesia (American Academy of Pediatrics & ACOG, 2012). Additional monitoring may be required for patients with histories of preeclampsia or eclampsia, medical or surgical complications, or comorbidities (cardiac, respiratory, endocrine, renal, trauma).
