Uterine massage, accomplished by placing a hand on the lower abdomen and repetitively massaging or squeezing the uterus to stimulate uterine contraction, and evacuate any blood collecting in the lower uterine segment, is recommended every 10 minutes for 60 minutes after delivery (Hofmeyr, Abdel-Aleem, & Abdel-Aleem, 2013). This reduces blood loss and the need for uterotonic agents.
