Recovery is generally short, although more extensive laparoscopic procedures may require hospitalization of 1 to 2 days (Wieslander & Wong, 2013). Pain is usually minimal; oral analgesics should manage the pain. The most common complaint after laparoscopy is shoulder pain due to subdiaphragmatic accumulation of the carbon dioxide used for insufflation during the procedure or fluid or blood. Mild analgesics and supine positioning with the head of bed slightly elevated (30 degrees or less) may help minimize this pain.
