Storage of appropriate size, location, and appointments (such as electrical wiring, cabling, plumbing, air) are critical to supporting workflow.

  • Spatially separating clean items from used or visibly soiled items is critical to minimize cross-contamination risks. Clean and used/soiled areas should be completely separated by impervious barriers, such as walls, rather than a counter separated by a strip of colored tape.
  • Space for pillows, linens, and clean and sterile supplies should be configured to allow easy and efficient access, removal, and disposal, as well as for appropriate documentation for patient charges.
  • Sterile storage areas must meet requirements for ACH, temperature, and humidity monitoring.
  • Space and sufficient/appropriate wiring/cabling for current and strategically planned computerized and electrical equipment is critical for supporting current and future workflow and documentation.
  • Cleaning supplies must be clearly identifiable, easily available, and appropriate for the surfaces to be cleaned.
