The mandible is the largest and strongest of the facial bones; the force required to fracture the mandible can also damage the cervical spine. Airway compromise may occur in certain mandibular fractures because of the loss of support to the posterior oropharynx. Airway management is critical. Pain is also very important to manage. With open wounds and after surgery, perioral hygiene with mouth rinses is important (Doherty, 2010; Quinn & Schick, 2004; Burns & Blackwell, 2007).
