Inflammation of the diverticulum can put the patient at risk for peritonitis, pelvic abscess, bowel obstruction, fistula, persistent fever and pain, or uncontrollable bleeding. If rupture happens, an emergency surgery is in order. The most common surgery to treat a ruptured diverticulum is the colon resection, with or without a colostomy. Postoperative care is the same as for any patient undergoing abdominal surgery (Ignatavicius & Workman, 2015).
