Carotid artery stenosis is usually caused by atherosclerosis but can be the result of radiation to the neck or a clamp injury during previous carotid surgery. Stenosis usually occurs at the carotid bifurcation, bulb, or origin of the internal carotid artery and accounts for 50 to 75% of embolic strokes in the carotid territory annually.
