Intermaxillary fixation (IMF) is necessary to reestablish the proper dentoskeletal relationships. A critical part of managing the fracture involves restoring occlusion of the maxillary and mandibular dentition. Arch bars are placed before fracture exposure and plating. The proper occlusal alignment will guide proper reduction of the bone fracture. IMF may provide closed reduction as a stand-alone procedure in management of mandible fracture or used as an adjunct for open reduction internal fixation with plates. IMF can result in significant weight loss after surgery (Doherty, 2010; Burns & Blackwell, 2007).
