In advanced ovarian cancer, metastases to the omentum are expected (Hoffman et al., 2012i). Tumor debulking and cancer staging are the primary reasons for removal of the omentum. It may also be used in patients without obvious metastatic disease. Of note, if a total omentectomy has been performed, gastric decompression is continued for 48 hours to avoid gastric dilation. This protects ligated gastric vessels from postoperative dislodgement.
