Due to the swelling inside the gastrointestinal tract, the patient may feel a pressure or tightness that should dissipate in 6 to 8 weeks. The discharge nurse should advise the patient to avoid carbonated drinks for 3 to 4 week in order to alleviate internal bloating. Solid foods should be gradually added to the patents daily diet and the importance of chewing should be emphasized. To prevent and avoid infection, proper teaching is needed to keep the incisional area clean and dry. Signs and symptoms of complication (persistent fever, bleeding, increasing pain, persistent nausea and vomiting, chills, and persistent cough or shortness of breath) must be immediately reported to the doctor (Rothrock, 2014).
